The OSPIVV, a non-governmental organization advocating for the rights of oil spill victims and transparency in Nigeria’s extractive industries, brought the lawsuit against Shell Group and Britannia Steamship Insurance Association Ltd. The claim centers on the severe environmental damage caused by the spill, which the OSPIVV alleges was due to negligence.
Executive Director of OSPIVV, Harrison Jalla, expressed hope that the court’s decision will favor the affected communities, who suffered from what he described as the worst pollution in the region’s history.
