NSITF, FOCI Partner to Ensure ECS Coverage for Casual Workers in Construction Sector

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has called for a joint task force with the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI) to ensure that all casual workers in the construction sector are covered under the Employees Compensation Scheme (ECS).

NSITF Managing Director, Oluwaseun Faleye, raised concerns about the lack of ECS coverage for thousands of casual workers in the industry, highlighting the risks they face in the event of workplace accidents or fatalities. Faleye emphasized that while contract staff are currently covered, casual workers, who face similar risks and contribute to project progress, remain unprotected. He described this situation as a significant threat to workplace safety and fairness.

Faleye proposed the creation of a joint task force to address the issue, suggesting innovative solutions such as flexible premium structures or pooled resources. He stressed that ensuring ECS coverage for all workers is not only a matter of compliance but also a recognition of their dignity and worth.

Additionally, Faleye underscored the importance of enhancing workplace safety and health standards in the construction industry, which he said has a high incidence of preventable accidents. He urged the sector to adopt modern safety practices and occupational health measures to safeguard workers.

In a related development, the NSITF reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) to promote workplace safety. Faleye pledged to expand initiatives like the Safe Work Intervention Project, aimed at improving safety standards and rewarding best practices in the industry. NECA Director-General, Adewale Smart Oyerinde, praised the NSITF’s leadership and reiterated NECA’s support for initiatives that reduce workplace risks and enhance employer compliance.
