The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State chapter, has urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to include pensioners in the National and State Health Insurance Schemes. The appeal was made during the 2024 Pensioners Day celebration at the NUP Secretariat in Leme, Abeokuta, where the pensioners also requested a 50% discount for subscribers.

NUP Chairman, Waidi Oloyede, highlighted the importance of health relief for senior citizens amid the country’s worsening economic conditions. While expressing gratitude for the regular payment of pensions and other initiatives, Oloyede stressed that more should be done for pensioners’ welfare, particularly in terms of health coverage.
“Most senior citizens are battling health challenges,” Oloyede noted, urging that pensioners be fully integrated into the National Health Insurance Scheme and provided a 50% rebate, similar to what is granted to mainstream personnel.
Oloyede also raised concerns about the delay in implementing a consequential increase in pensions. He reminded the governor of a committee inaugurated in July 2022 to review pension increases, which has yet to produce any results. Pensioners further called for their representation in negotiations concerning the new national wage increase.
In response, Mrs. Lydia Fajounbo, Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Establishment, assured the pensioners that the government would continue its efforts to meet their demands.
