ABUJA—The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has announced new measures to reinstate pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) who were removed from the pension payroll due to being unverified and living abroad.
The Executive Secretary of PTAD, Dr. Chioma Ejikeme, revealed that these pensioners, previously excluded from the pension payroll following the nationwide pensioner verification exercise, will be reinstated under specific conditions. The suspension initially excluded sick pensioners and those living in the diaspora. Dr. Ejikeme clarified that a new policy has now been introduced to facilitate the validation of pensioners residing overseas.

As part of this initiative, diaspora pensioners who were on the inherited payroll from August 2015 will be added back to the payroll, pending their physical verification. To complete the process, diaspora pensioners are required to submit specific documents via email to complaints@ptad.gov.ng.
These include their first appointment letter, last promotion letter, acceptance of retirement letter, a bank statement showing the last pension received, a BVN slip with a photograph, a valid means of identification, and an “I Am Alive” certification issued by the Nigerian High Commission or a notarized letter confirming their aliveness.

Dr. Ejikeme further emphasized that diaspora pensioners must update their Aliveness Certificate every six months to remain eligible for their monthly pension. Failure to provide updated documentation will result in suspension from the pension payroll.
This move is part of PTAD’s ongoing effort to ensure the integrity of the pension system while accommodating the unique circumstances of pensioners residing outside Nigeria.
