Nigeria has witnessed a remarkable 11% growth in health insurance enrollment over the past year, reflecting significant progress in expanding healthcare coverage nationwide. As of the fourth quarter of 2023, approximately 16 million Nigerians were enrolled in various health insurance schemes. This figure has now surged to about 18.7 million, surpassing the government’s annual target by 8% and demonstrating the potential to achieve, and even exceed, the ambitious goals set for 2027.
This surge is attributed to the concerted efforts of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and various state governments. Notably, within the first 100 days of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, announced an additional 750,000 new enrollments as part of a broader initiative to enhance healthcare coverage across Nigeria.

Under the leadership of Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, the NHIA has been pivotal in driving these efforts. Since the beginning of 2023, the agency has implemented targeted strategies to boost enrollment figures, moving closer to the administration’s goal of achieving universal healthcare coverage by 2030. A key component of this strategy includes strengthening collaboration between public and private sector partners to ensure a unified approach to healthcare delivery.
Among the NHIA’s initiatives is the ongoing review of capitation fees paid to healthcare providers. These fixed payments, based on the estimated value of services provided to patients, are designed to incentivize quality care and attract more enrollees. A temporary capitation rate has been set, with a revised rate expected to be announced soon, highlighting the government’s commitment to refining the healthcare system.

This significant increase in health insurance enrollment not only marks a statistical achievement but also represents a critical step forward in Nigeria’s quest for universal healthcare access.
